Weather Themed Sensory Bins for Spring

Weather Themed Sensory Bins

Weather is one of my favorite themes to teach in Spring, and these weather themed sensory bins are one reason why!  They are so simple and inexpensive to prep, but the kids love them. You probably already have the supplies on hand, and I’ve got some free printables to help you finish setting up your weather themed sensory bins.

The Bins

I call Bin #1 our Rainbow Color Sorting Bin.  All you’ll need for this fun weather themed sensory bin is some rainbow colored pom poms, some small tongs or jumbo tweezers, and some rainbow colored cups.  I bet you have most of those materials already.  If not, you can find my favorite pom poms here.  The perfect cups can be found in the party section at Walmart.  They have ALL the colors for just 98 cents per pack.

Or if you’d prefer, you can use plain white cups to set up your rainbow sensory bin and add the FREE labels I’ll share at the end of this post.

This weather themed sensory bin is fun for toddlers or preschoolers.  Instruct the children to use only the tongs to pick up each pom pom and transfer it to the matching color cup.  This is a fun time to talk about the colors of the rainbow and the order they can always be found in.

At the end of the sorting activity, you could help children count the pom poms in each cup and have them try to figure out which cup has the most.

Another Weather Themed Sensory Bin

The next bin is also perfect for your weather theme unit or in Spring when it’s rainy.  I like to call it our Rainy Day Sensory Bin.  For this bin you’ll only need blue, white, and yellow pom poms.  You’ll also need a blue, white, and yellow cup to go with the pom poms.

Again, if you want to use white cups only, I’ve got some free labels you can add to this Rainy Day Sensory Bin to differentiate the cups.

Wouldn’t it be fun to play some rainy day music in the background while your child engages with this sensory bin?  Another fun way to use this sensory bin is to have your child make patterns.  Since the bin uses only three colors, the children can make AB, ABC, or ABB patterns.

The FREE printables at the end of this post also include some pattern strips perfect for this activity.  Simply have the child place the appropriate color pom pom on each section of the pattern strip and then complete the pattern.

Would you love to use these weather themed sensory bins with your preschoolers?  Click on the button below to download the FREE printables and then pair them with some pom poms and cups!
