My students love, love, love writing in their journals. But they’re often at a loss for what to write…or how to spell a particular word. Journals are perfect for filling in gaps in the day when students finish first, or for calming everyone down after lunch. My students never sigh or complain when I ask them to take out their journals. They love them! But I wanted to be able to create a bit more independence when it came to journal writing. I also wanted students to consistently practice writing sight words correctly to ingrain them in their memories. I didn’t want to have to make a million copies every month putting together cutesy little journals with clipart, writing prompts, lined paper, etc. I thought and thought and came up with what, I hope, will be a winning solution: Washi Journals!
