Are your kiddos BONKERS for Junie B? Mine sure are! We had the pleasure of going to a musical version of Jingle Bells, Batman Smells right before Christmas and it was so much fun! We are going through the entire series at teacher read-aloud time, and there are MORE than a few giggles erupting at every reading! Not only do I love read aloud time with Junie B., but I love to challenge my higher readers with Junie B. reading trifolds.
The trifolds cover a HUGE range of skills and strategies including… story sequence, cause and effect, parts of speech, dialogue, problem/solution, making predictions, and more! Students complete one section of the trifold with each chapter they read. At the conclusion of a chapter, students get out their first grade journals (like Junie B. ) to record their thoughts, observations, what they learned, etc.
I just love their sweet journal entries. (We spend a lot of time talking about what NOT to do like Junie B.!) After all, shut up and dumb are profanity in first grade!
Speaking of what we learn from Junie B. (or try to unlearn!), my students brainstormed this list:
